They've changed it up...why?
Normally it's Stadium start, Lydford, Bog Walk, New Kingston.
Now there isn't even a New Kingston - what happen - Mayor McKenzie shut it down?

They should try get back Caymanas Crossing - the cane field did mhad!!

So, they have not been able to get the most popular stage of the rally going - damn, that ruff.
As a rally fan I don't really like New Kingston cause it's a spectating nightmare and more than likely a rally marshals nightmare also.

JMMC's Int'l Stages Rally set for Dec 5-6

By Hurbun Williams Observer writer

Friday, November 20, 2009

Motor rallying is a sport Jamaicans from all walks life prepare for each year and after a sobering year for the sport locally, the JMMC announced the 2009 Petcom/Hilton Kingston International Stages Rally to be held on December 5-6.

Thirty-five entries have been received for the event which will run over 27 stages and will include terrains of scenic Rio Ho, Lydford, New Works, Bybrook, Wakefield and then onto the National Stadium in Kingston.
David Mais of the SDF and a member of the JMMC is seen with Alphonso Chambers, marketing and sales manager of chief sponsors Petcom; Charlene Chambers, marketing representative of sponsors Tru-Juice, and Rally Jamaica organiser Larry Henriques. (Photo: Hurbun Williams)

Rally Jamaica organiser Larry Henriques said despite the reduced entries, "competition will be fierce as there are four WRC Spec cars; six overseas entries from three different countries; a full JN8 class, along with a returning veteran Jamaican driver in a BMW".

Forty-two cars took part last year, with Jamaicans Jeffrey "Fudgie" Panton and co-driver Michael Fennell Jnr winning the prestigious event.

Rallies as large as Rally Jamaica, Henriques said, are arguably one of the most costly to stage as they are normally held on public roads or property covering vast areas of land.

This, according to Henriques, "has always resulted in the organisers not being able to recoup expenses. Yet each year we are able to bring not less than $12 million in business to Kingston with the Hilton Kingston responsible for just over $4 million."

He said unlike last year, the event will begin in New Kingston with Parc Expose on Friday, December 4. During this period, competitors and sponsors can showcase products and allow the public to view the different machines before the onslaught of the next two days.

On Saturday morning, the usually quiet hills of Lydford, Moneague and surrounding areas of St Ann will be awakened by the thunderous roar of the engines of competitors' cars on their way to completing their first stage of Rally Jamaica.

The normally gruelling Reynolds stage will be replaced by another stage in the neighbouring community. This, Henriques said, should bring hope to many competitors that they would not be part of the usually large list of cars making an exit from the event due to the high mortality rate of previous years on the Reynolds stage.

Day Two will take drivers to the usual Bog Walk Orchards where the Trade Winds Citrus property, home of Tru-Juice, will be their playground for the day.

The National Stadium in Kingston is the final stop for an afternoon of stunning display of three special stages. The Stadium Gala, Henriques explained, "will be the venue where the various competitors attempt to gain or regain the lead in their respective classes".

Recession has hit everyone...

Digicel jumped ship so no New Kingston; this along with the obvious safety issues. It didn't help when the quad hit the spectator last year...and as Z.ro said, it's a marshall's nightmare.
Reynolds is out - not sure why, but it's a known car breaker.
I think they will be charging admission for the Stadium stage on Sunday in order to get back some of the money spent....bear that in mind.

No cars will be run on Friday; just the ceremonial start when they drive over the start and then they'll park and meet and greet.

Peace.

Today's the day guys!

At 5:30pm (or thereabouts) the ceremonial start to Rally Jamaica 2009 begins in New Kingston in the JIIC parking lot.... good

As indicated before the cars will just be on display, along with the drivers for a meet and greet session.

This will be the only chance to see the cars when they're nice and clean...Of course being a Friday, this means that traffic in New Kingston will be worse than ever...

Otherwise go see them on:

Saturday  - Petcom Moneague, Lydford (near Orange park) & Rio Hoe
Sunday - Bog Walk orange groves, New Works & ending at the Stadium

Persons going to the Rally could meet up at Angels Plaza, St Catherine (Plaza before entering the Bog Walk Gorge)  on

Saturday @ 5:30 am to go to St Ann

Sunday @ 6:00 am to go to Bog Walk

Better to go early to get a good parking spot  dance dance

...
Saturday  - Petcom Moneague, Lydford (near Orange park) & Rio Hoe
Are they doing something at Petcom Moneague then going to Lydford?
Have they done Petcom Moneague b4? Don't think i understand where they going to do this.

Is Lydford the regular Lydford where you turn down near the church? Or you go all the way to the gas station (Total i think) and turn right?

They are starting at Moneague but the parking and set up is at Lydford (Tegareg can verify this  Huh?  )

Lydford ....turn right at the gas station when going through Chalky Hill

Ok....is time for JMMC to use Google Maps and send out Spectator Positions B4 the actual event.
I normally see it in the rally magazine which i only get when i go on the stage and see the people walking around with it.

Zro, no action will happen at Petcom Moneague that's just where each competitor gets their start time for the day. After they get this, they will transit to the first stage and then the fun begins! After the last stage, they transit back to this location to have their times recorded. This is done for every rally.

Not sure of the church route, but Tweety is right where you turn right at the gas station (now Cool Oasis), go through the roundabout and turn into the factory yard. You can get a good view of the stage from there. Actually if you go early enough, you could park on the stage and get better views, but I wouldn't recommend that as rain always falls....even if it doesn't the terrain is not street car friendly.

I agree, they need to get Google maps....

Nope - that's the Subaru S12 WRC of John Powell; yes that car is  diablo and the driver is very aggressive - dangerous combination!
He finished 3rd overall to the 2 Fords.... sorry

Richie has a Subaru Blue LHD bugeye that 's extensively modified. I believe it was built to WRC specs, but it's not an original WRC.

I think that this is the first rally that I've seen where the Subarus outnumbered the Mitsubishis - good sign!

All the various Impreza chassis types were there:

GC - James Betts (Barbados), Joel Jackson (Jam)
GD - Bajan dude (can't remember name), John Powell (as mentioned above), R. Rerrie
G? (new shape) - Harold Morely (who is 79 years old!)

And all except for Richie finished!

Yeah for the time he participated, Richie put on an excellent display at Bog Walk - he's clearly outgrown this car but finances don't allow a machine upgrade at present.... sorry

Plain and straight - me tired of rally. I spent 2 hours at Bog Walk and left.
Tired of the same thing year after year.
New drivers were are welcomed sight BUT what's the use when you have top man dem don't even have to listen to them co-drivers cause them know the course after 10 years of doing it over and over.

Bring in some new stage man - some downtown, caymanas crossing, SOMETHING!!
I didn't go to stadium cause i was so disappointed. Worse when i reach Bog Walk and realize that the money making side took away the best viewing spot. That bad and not so bad cause you get free juice all day served by so fine as...ahem....excuse me....ladies.

I want the JMMC to have Google Maps out long before the rest day so people can change up them spots. People can't be expected to reach the morning of the rally and scout the stage. Worse trying to scout b4 the rally, you might get a big stone from the land owners.

Mi tired of rally - there is just so much donuts that u can see b4 u've seen them all.

Not sure what to say here Zro, the repeated stage format was primarily due to the cash crunch and who's available to sponsor...Tru Juice is forever a sponsor and they actually (I believe) get those stages for free. What they try to do is change the configurations each year (as one competitor who used last years pace notes found out)....

Other places would require hefty fees and without sponsorship would not be possible.

I actually believe downtown would be better than New Kingston and I also believe that we need a Superspecial stage where two cars run simultaneously....

But I'm not a sponsor!

That's the thing....benefits only the drivers so they enjoy themselves while spectators have no idea what the stage looks like prior so we can do some scouting and find NEW spots. This year, i didn't even see the regular Rally magazine. That mash me up cause i have no idea (other than Marsha's email and post) about what happening, where and when.

I actually believe downtown would be better than New Kingston and I also believe that we need a Superspecial stage where two cars run simultaneously...
SUPER SPECIAL!!!
That's the best thing i've heard YET!!!!
Stadium can setup a Super Special - GEEZ. I would pay money to see that.
I'm excited just thinking about that!!!

Lol - calm down Zro.... Roll On Floor Laughing

Yeah IMHO it can easily be done...Barbados has a wicked one with a bridge where one car passes over the other - awesome!

Not sure why that has not been employed here; just imagine the S12 Subaru and 05 Focus going at it, head to head! spiteful
