Excerpts taken from www.wheelsjamaica.com - FYI

11. Mug Rally Championship
Eligibility

a) Open to novices / rookies only.

b) Total number of Mug Rallies events held for the championship year will
count towards the Mug Rally Championship.

c) Points are earned by the following:
i) Navigational Rally - Overall position

d) A novice will be promoted to an Expert in the following manner: -
i) Any competitor who has placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd overall in a major
rally. (Including Rabbits & Hares)
ii) Any competitor who has won two Mug Rallies.
iii) Any competitor who has won the Rabbits section of a Rabbits &
Hares rally.
iv) Any competitor who has entered six rallies other than Mug rallies
automatically qualify as an expert.
v) Any competitor who has won this championship automatically
qualifies as an expert.

Mug Rallies are navigational rallies where the team is usually given a road map or an instructional diagram to guide them along the designated route along the public roads.

Guidelines would be given such as speed limit and you would be given a time frame to arrive at certain check points so there would be the use of Marshals at Time Controls (TC).

Mug Rallies are really for those persons who would like to be more involved in motor racing and may or may not have a prepped rally car... street cars are mainly used. This is to give persons the opportunity to hone navigational skills.

Hey... getting lost is part of the ting so don't worry about that too much.

Hello All,

RaceJamaica.com invites you to participate in the first Mug Rally of 2009 on Sunday, March 15, proposed start time is 9:00 a.m.

The Jamaica Millenium Motoring Club (JMMC) and the Montego Bay Motoring Club (MBMC) in association with RaceJamaica.com and friends, have decided to team up to bring back this beloved genre of motorsport.

A mug rally is a navigational rally held on public roads. Speeding is strictly prohibited and speed limits are to be adhered throughout the event. Each team (driver and co-driver also possibly time keeper) will receive a map and route instructions. There will be marshals to enforce that the proper routes are used and also questions to be answered etc as part of the course. For this event two rallies will be held concurrently. One rally will start in Montego Bay and the other will start in Kingston, with both finishing at the same popular location in St. Ann's Bay.

The event is family oriented and is guaranteed good fun. To ensure everyone is familiar with navigational notes etc. we will also have a training session at our regular monthly meeting and it is strongly recommended that all prospective participants attend.

For all those interested in entering please email us at mugrally@racejamaica.com so we can keep you updated on the progress of the event. Additional information when it is finalised will be sent to you and posted on our website www.racejamaica.com

Thanks.

Regards,
The RaceJamaica.com Team

Read carefully guys - this is not a speed event. It takes place on public roads and therefore all applicable laws and regulations are in effect. Sorry Stig, Spec, etc... Cool

It more of a navigational rally, where you follow a given route map and answer questions relating to things you observe along the way. Like a treasure hunt.

Where the timing comes in, is that you are expected to be at the checkpoints at specific times.

Tips:

1. Watch the time: note the times you are due to check in and out of checkpoints. You get penalized for being too early or too late.
2. Carry more than one passenger. The more eyes and hands that you have to assist you, the better.
3. Be observant.
4. Do not rush - remember you have to answer the questions asked; this counts towards your final score. take the time to review and answer the questions.
5. You may have to stop and exit the vehicle to answer some questions, digital cameras with good zoom, can assist.

Can't think of any more.... Grin

Peace.

I've tried exercise but can't find Q2 (which is suppose to be Grenada Crescent) BUT knowing that alone doesn't help me. I wish they were able to find another time to have the actual Table Top exercise instead of going into this BLIND and out of $2500.

Definitely...right up until 10pm when we had to stop cause it was getting late. The Table Top session wasn't even started. The instructions are good...but, it would be better if we had actually completed the table top using the map. That way, we wud have at least run through one practice session.

15 Started
11 Made it to Scotchies
9 were able to be scored as 2 didn't have enough information on their card - lol

My team (Navigator-Me, Driver-My Brother, Co-Navigator-A friend) came 9th Overall and 7th in Rabbit class.

There was a award for Most "Lost" team. The most "lost" team got a better mug than the winners to rahtid - lol

It was really fun - next time me ready for them though.

Ha Ha, i should have navi from the beginning. After contemplating kicking the navi out the car the time keeper convince me to navi and he will drive and at least keep the old navi in the car. But it was too late to get back in the game. As you can see from the video my navi had no clue to what was happening.

15 started 11 finished, out of those only 9 were classified as finishers because u have to pass 75% of the tc/rc's in order to have completed the rally

Mug Rally is simply F&F - Fun and Frustrating.
You get your instructions couple minutes (under 2 mins) before they send you off. You have the time to prepare yourself, do preliminary calculations and mapping and before u step up to the plate and get going.

Hint #1 - Drive a comfortable, fuel efficient vehicle.
You will get lost and you will drive in circles so make sure u have nuff gas.

U need a drive and a navigator at minimum.
You are allowed a total of 2 other passengers - i say use them up. You need people to keep track of the Mileage Driven, Time Taken and do the calculations to fill out the table they give u.

It's really fun...especially when ur lost. Worse when u see other persons and u wondering who really loss - u or them?

The next one is in May - heard it's going to be a night one and not as long as the first one.

Hint #2 - FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!!!
If it says follow the map...follow the map. If u ever try do it using ur eyes u going to get what the duck get (and it wasn't a grain of salt).
Sometimes the maps will have roads that are not actually there.

We started at Boulevard Super Centre. Cars are started one minute apart.
This below is an example of the instructions we got:

Turn R (0.00) out of Plaza
Begin journey using the following abbreviated instructions;
L@T, L@TL, SO@TL x 2, L@TL, R@T, SOx2, R@T, R@T, SOx4, FL, L@T, SOx2....and it goes on and on.

Then u had to use the map for the next set of instructions
SO@X, SOx4,  L, SOx3, L, L@T, L@T, R@T, SOx8, L, SOx5, etc, etc, etc

You will also get herringbone map (see PDF here http://www.hrcr.co.uk/images/uploaded/7337438_3921922.pdf)

There are route checks, off-route checks, Time Checks, Off-route checks are what u don't want to see cause it means ur...as the name suggests....off route aka lost! lol
If you following the instructions correctly, you should be approaching each check from one direction. If u approach from the direction, u get marked down and get points.

*Less points u finish with...better off you are.

If you reach late - it's 10 points per minute late.
If u reach early - it's 20 points per minute late.
If u miss Time Check - it's 300 points to ur total
and it goes on and on.

It's fun...make sure u have fun people with you. Makes no sense you have people who too serious and going to start argument about whether to turn left or right.
